If you change the oil on a regular basis (500-900) miles you can go an easy 6000+ miles before ever tearing into it. Valves need to be checked every 1000 or so miles. The more miles the more often they need to be checked. Mine get checked sometimes every oil change. Regarding my KTM 500 oil changes, I do mine every thousand miles.
